An Opening and a Closing for Brother Joseph

The Staff here at Bandhymns.com would like to take a moment to offer our gratitude to all the men and women who have given their all to preserve the Constitution of the United States and protect our boarders and way of life.

We thank you on this Memorial Day!

“Giving your all” to a cause reminded us of two events in the life of Joseph Smith, an opening event which is commemorated in hymn #26, Joseph Smith’s First Prayer; and a closing event which is associated with hymn #29, A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief.

32496_all_001_01-VisionHymn #26 describes the seminal event which began the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is known as the First Vision.

The martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith is often commemorated by singing hymn #29.  Why?  As noted in the History of the Church: “On the afternoon that Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, were killed by a mob in prison in Carthage, Illinois, the Smiths requested [John] Taylor sing [A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief] twice.” (B. H. Roberts (ed.) (1902). History of the Church, vol. 6, pp. 614–15; vol. 7, p. 101.)joseph_hyrum_statueBandhymns.com is pleased to provide duet arrangements of these two meaningful hymns for all our standard instruments available now for download.
